Women Only Triathlon Sessions

SPORT RELIEF SUPPORT WOMEN ONLY SWIM SESSIONS

Absolute Triathlon Club in Nottingham have been successful in securing a £1000 Sport Relief grant to provide women only triathlon swim sessions.

The swim sessions will take place every at 4.45 pm every Sunday afternoon at Southglade Leisure Centre in Bestwood, Nottingham and will feature specialist swim coaching from local swim teacher Kate Long who is herself a highly skilled swimmer and triathlete. The sessions are £3.50 and are available to non club members and beginners are welcome.

The launch of these sessions is to try and boost the number of women taking part in triathlon in the area as currently only 30% of the clubs membership base are female which mirrors how the sport is made up across the county.

Chairman Steve Lloyd said “Triathlon is considered a male dominated sport but there are more and more women only events taking place across the country. Triathlon isn’t just for the super fit it’s a great way of managing your weight, toning up and increasing aerobic fitness it’s also one of the friendliest sports around. If there are women out there who have thought about doing a triathlon but don’t know where to start these sessions are a great introduction.”

The club, which launched in April 2009, have been very active in encouraging beginners into the sport running junior sessions, women only bike rides, and providing sessions across the week catering for all abilities. The hardwork has paid off as the club now has over 100 members across all ages.

Jayne Lloyd, Club Secretary commented “Joining our women only triathlon swim session means that you will be supported, encouraged and motivated by our coaches as well as improving your technique and swim stroke. You will also get valuable advice about taking part in triathlon including what kit you might need and what other training you ought to be doing giving you loads of confidence for your first race.”

The club stress that you need to be able to swim 50 metres confidently before coming to the sessions.

Open Water Sessions Launched at Holme Pierrepont

Absolute Triathlon Coaching in Nottingham will be holding a series of coached open water sessions at the National Watersports Centre starting on Friday April 30th. The sessions will be coached by the current ITU Age Group World Champion Nick Dunn and leading Level 3 Coach Steve Lloyd and will take place weekly until September.

This will be the first time that regular open water swimming at Holme Pierrepont has been made available to triathletes outside of Absolutes’ Nottingham based club and the decision was in response to the increased demand for training sessions in the build up to new race the ‘Outlaw’ and the infamous National Relays.

Steve Lloyd commented “We will be providing high quality open water swim coaching to triathletes across the East Midlands and beyond and we can cater for all abilities and all distances. Whether you are looking to take part in your first open water race this season, want to increase your confidence or are an experienced triathlete looking to make improvements theses sessions are a great place to start”.

As well as boasting one of the best open water venues in the area Holme Pierrepont also has plenty of off road running trails and offers the opportunity to do some serious transition practice, over the course of the summer Absolute will also be running various additional sessions including bike handing skills and race preparation.

To attend the sessions there is a one off registration fee of £10, the first session in free and subsequent sessions are £6. Included in the price is coaching, parking, changing rooms and showers, there is also a bar on site serving drinks and snacks. Most sessions will take place on a Friday evening 6.30 pm – 7.30 pm with some exceptions, pre-registration is essential and for more information please contact Jayne Lloyd on 0115 9607912.

About Triathlon

Triathlon
is an endurance sport comprise of 3 disciplines – Swimming, Cycling and Running over varying distances including Sprint, Olympic and Ironman.  Not only does the Triathlete have to be skilled in each of these categories they also have to plan, prepare and conserve their energy to complete the full course.  The part of the race in which you change between the different legs of the race is called transition and most triathletes know that this in itself is a skill!  During transition changes of equipment, clothing and shoes has to be completed as quickly as possible with the minimum of fuss – valuable time can be lost through poor transition.

It is thought that Triathlon as a sport began in France in during the 20’s and 30’s but the first official triathlon race took place in California in on September 25th 1974 in which 46 athletes competed.

The first Olympic Sprint Triathlon took place at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and today Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK with the proportion of women taking part increasing every year.
