West Midlands Region

29.12.2009 Steve Lloyd appointed West Midlands Regional Head Coach

Age group triathlete and Level 3 Tri Coach Steve Lloyd has been appointed Regional Head Coach for the British Triathlon Federation (BTF) in the West Midlands.

Steve will be working alongside the West Midlands committee to lead a Regional Academy capable of developing athletes from local and regional programmes to become national and internationally recognised athletes in line with the BTF National Development Strategy. As well as monthly academy days, athletes will also benefit from on-going coaching and continuous monitoring.

Steve said “I am really looking forward to helping those talented athletes in the West Midlands to build on their potential and give them opportunities to experience top quality coaching from inside and outside the sport with a view to producing athletes capable of being accepted on to the World Class Programme. I also hope that through nurturing these young athletes that they are all given the opportunity to reach their potential and be the best they are capable of and to be proud to be a part of the West Midlands Regional Academy.”

The West Midlands region consists of six counties comprising of, Birmingham, Black Country, Greater Warwickshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcester & Hereford. There are over 25 clubs based in the region providing quality coaching for competitive and recreational triathletes and there is a strong emphasis to encourage all abilities. The region has a very effective and active committee currently chaired by Rob Robson.

Steve commented “It is really great to be working with such a dynamic team in the West Midlands, I hope to bring my skills, experience and to make the academy the performance focus of the entire region that junior triathletes strive to be a part of. I have previously assisted at the Academy and it’s a huge honour to be back developing new and existing talent as well as working with the high number of quality club coaches throughout the region.”

Steve has been involved in sport and coaching for over 16 years and has run his own Triathlon Coaching business, Absolute Triathlon for 6 years. He is also Head Coach and Chairman for Nottingham based Absolute Triathlon Club launched in 2009 which now boasts over 100 members including just under 40 juniors.

About Triathlon

Triathlon
is an endurance sport comprise of 3 disciplines – Swimming, Cycling and Running over varying distances including Sprint, Olympic and Ironman.  Not only does the Triathlete have to be skilled in each of these categories they also have to plan, prepare and conserve their energy to complete the full course.  The part of the race in which you change between the different legs of the race is called transition and most triathletes know that this in itself is a skill!  During transition changes of equipment, clothing and shoes has to be completed as quickly as possible with the minimum of fuss – valuable time can be lost through poor transition.

It is thought that Triathlon as a sport began in France in during the 20’s and 30’s but the first official triathlon race took place in California in on September 25th 1974 in which 46 athletes competed.

The first Olympic Sprint Triathlon took place at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and today Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK with the proportion of women taking part increasing every year.
